Seti River Expedition - 7 Days
This is the far-western expedition — nine days and roughly 175km of the Seti and the Karnali, two of the least-fished major rivers in Nepal. You fly to Nepalgunj, drive eight to nine hours to Dipayal, and then float and fish continuously through Grade III+ gorges, isolated hill settlements and the confluence pools that far-western anglers have worked for generations: Jungle Ghat, Scorpion Beach, Juicer, Flip and Strip, Thulighat and Rato Bhale Gaun. Mahseer Camp on the Karnali holds a recorded 139cm Mahseer. Everything is catch and release, and everything is carried with us — there are no resupply points out here.
The Seti drains the snowfields of Api (7,132m) and Saipal (7,031m) and picks up snow-fed tributaries all the way south. The Karnali begins near Manasarovar on the Tibetan border and gathers the Rara, Mugu Karnali and Humla Karnali before the two meet in far-western Nepal to form one of the largest and most remote river systems in the country — over fifty species of fish and aquatic life in water that stays clear almost year-round. Golden Mahseer (Tor putitora) and Silver Mahseer (Tor tor) are the headline fish, with Goonch and giant catfish alongside them, and the confluences are where migrating fish concentrate. October to April is the working season; autumn and spring give the most reliable water levels, warm days and mountain visibility. Because several of these species are close to extinction we operate strict catch and release.
7-Day Seti–Karnali Expedition
Follow the Seti downstream from Dipayal to its great Karnali confluence, then continue through remote wilderness to Chisapani.
Great River Confluences
Fish productive junctions including the Budhi Ganga and Seti–Karnali confluences, where current, oxygen and baitfish attract trophy fish.
Seti to Mighty Karnali
Experience the river transform from clear canyon water to the powerful main Karnali, with deeper runs, stronger currents and big-river fishing.
Trip Itinerary (7 Days)
Day 01
Drive Upstream to Gopghat / Dipayal Put-In Point
expand_more
Drive Upstream to Gopghat / Dipayal Put-In Point
Depart early for the overland drive upstream into Doti District to reach the launch point on the Seti River near Dipayal Silgadhi. The drive ascends through pine-covered hills and terraced farmland flanking the river valley.
Logistics: Meet your river crew, inflate the gear and gear-raft, run through safety briefings, and set up your initial riverside camp.
Evening Angling: Perform an evening shore session right at the put-in site to target resident Asala (Snow Trout) and medium-sized Mahseer.
Camp: Tented camp on the gravel banks of the Seti River near Gopghat.
Day 02
Launch Float & Upper Seti Drift
expand_more
Launch Float & Upper Seti Drift
Push off onto the water after breakfast. The upper Seti section features clear water, mild to moderate class II–III rapids, and long, slow-moving pools ideal for drift fishing.
Angling Focus: Cast from the raft into deep eddies along the cliff walls using medium spinning setups, gold/silver spoons, or deep-diving plugs.
Target Species: Golden Mahseer and Goonch (Giant Devil Catfish).
Camp: Wilderness beach camp along a quiet stretch of the Seti River near Naridang.
Day 03
Drift to the Budhiganga Confluence
expand_more
Drift to the Budhiganga Confluence
Float deeper into the wild canyon corridor where the Seti flows through pristine, unpopulated hillsides.
Angling Focus: Target the major river junction where the बुढीगंगा नदी feeds into the Seti. Confluences are key feeding zones where migrating fish gather. Focus on casting around rock drop-offs and tailraces.
Night Angling: Set up heavy bottom rigs with bait after dark around the junction, as Goonch catfish become active nocturnal feeders.
Camp: Tented wilderness camp at the confluence of the Seti and Budhi Ganga rivers.
Day 04
Mid-River Canyon & "Scorpion Beach" Drift
expand_more
Mid-River Canyon & "Scorpion Beach" Drift
Drift through the narrowest gorge section of the Seti River, where massive boulders create deep natural pools (daha).
Angling Focus: Slow down the drift to fish quiet pockets and undercut rock ledges. Shore-cast on foot at strategic gravel bars where large Golden Mahseer sit in the seam lines.
Technique: Maintain steady casts ahead of the raft drift; use barbless hooks to facilitate quick, safe releases.
Camp: Tented camp at a broad, sandy river bend (often called Scorpion Beach).
Day 05
Seti-Karnali Dobhan (The Great Confluence)
expand_more
Seti-Karnali Dobhan (The Great Confluence)
Float down the final stretch of the Seti River to reach its confluence with the mighty Karnali River at Seti Dobhan.
Angling Focus: Spend extended time fishing the massive mixing zone where the Seti meets the main trunk of the Karnali. This confluence is widely regarded as one of the premier trophy Golden Mahseer spots in Western Nepal due to heavy oxygenation and baitfish concentration.
Camp: Expansive white-sand beach camp at Seti Dobhan.
Day 06
Floating the Main Karnali River
expand_more
Floating the Main Karnali River
Enter the main body of the Karnali River. The water volume increases significantly, transitioning into big river drifts with wide gravel beaches and large, deep green pools.
Angling Focus: Target heavy water seams, eddy lines, and deep runs along the main river channel. Heavy casting gear with 20–30 lb braided line is recommended to handle the stronger current and larger fish potential.
Camp: Final wilderness camp on a quiet beach bank above the Bheri River confluence.
Day 07
Final Float to Chisapani Take-Out & Departure
expand_more
Final Float to Chisapani Take-Out & Departure
Float the remaining scenic stretch down to the end point at the Karnali Bridge, Chisapani, where the river breaks out of the hills into the Terai plains.
Angling & Wrap-Up: Do final morning casts along the tailwaters before reaching the highway bridge by midday. Break down equipment, pack gear, and meet your return transport.
Gear & Trip Preparation Notes
Tackle: Medium-to-heavy spinning or fly setups (8–9 wt rods for Mahseer, 3000–5000 series spinning reels), sturdy shock leaders, and single barbless hooks.
Logistics & Escort: River expeditions on this stretch require complete self-sufficiency (support raft for food/tents), local river guide expertise, and appropriate regional fishing permits.
